A report from the United Nations, details 35 cyber attacks in 17 countries by North Korea. The attacks targeted mostly financial institutions and crypto currency exchanges. Of the countries attacked, South Korea was the hardest hit with 10 attacks. India, Bangladesh and Chile were also targeted.
According to the report, North Korea’s attacks consist primarily of three different types. Attacks on the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication or SWIFT system which is used to transfer money between banks. “with bank employee computers and infrastructure accessed to send fraudulent messages and destroy evidence.” Theft of cryptocurrency “through attacks on both exchanges and users.”, And “mining of cryptocurrency as a source of funds for a professional branch of the military.”.
The report also states, that due to these attacks the UN is now investigating each attack as a separate violation of currently imposed sanctions against the hermit kingdom.
