Tokyo Electric, the owner of the nuclear plant and leading the cleanup effort have said they are rapidly running out of storage containers. Storage is expected to run out by mid 2022. One of the the proposed storage methods, is the ocean.

South Korea has send a letter to the International Atomic Energy agency stating their opposition to the dumping of nuclear waste in the oceans waters.

Japan has said the decisions about where to dump the waste is not final. It is important to note that neither South Korea or the IAEA have any authority to regulate Japan’s nuclear activities.
