Beijing has summoned Germany’s Ambassador to the foreign ministry claiming it has “sufficient proof” that foreign forces have intervened in Hong Kong.
Earlier on Monday, German foreign minister Heiko Maas had a meeting and photo op with pro Hong Kong democracy activist Joshua Wong in Berlin. Wong is considered to be one of the most vocal anti-Beijing activists on the controversial extradition bill that has sparked the ongoing protests.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in response to the visit “It is extremely wrong for German media and politicians to attempt to tap into the anti-China separatist wave… It is disrespectful of China’s sovereignty and an interference in China’s internal affairs.”
What remains unclear is what proof Beijing claims to have on the interference, though it is believed that if it were substantial State media would have published it.
